I HAVE BROUGHT THIS VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE WHERE I PURCHASED IT COMPLAINING OF INTERMITTENT LOOSENESS IN STEERING, SQUEAKING AND CLUNKING. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THESE ISSUES, SQUEAKING WAS SUPPOSEDLY TIRE NOISE, CLUNKING WAS "JUST BUSHINGS". MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE IS SEVERELY WORN ON THE OUTER EDGES AT ONLY 5900 MILES, THE LEFT TIRE WEAR IS NORMAL. DEALER WOULD NOT EXPLAIN OR ASSES WHY THIS IS. TODAY I HAD THE STEERING WHEEL TURNED SHARP TO THE LEFT AND THERE WAS A VIBRATING NOISE AS IF METAL WAS HITTING AGAINST METAL. I CALLED SOMEONE OUT TO WITNESS THIS. ABOUT TWO MILES LATER I WAS DRIVING AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS DIFFICULT TO TURN ALL OF A SUDDEN AND STEERING FELT HEAVY. VEHICLE ALL OF A SUDDEN TURNS SHARPER AND STEERING RESPONDS DIFFERENT THAN USUAL. WHEN TRYING TO INVESTIGATE ISSUE AND MANEUVERING THE STEERING BACK AND FOURTH THE VEHICLE WAS SWERVING EXCESSIVELY AS IT NEVER HAD BEFORE. FRONT END FELT AS IF IT WAS TAKING BUMPS HARDER THAN USUAL AND WAS EVEN HOPPING SLIGHTLY OVER SOME BUMPS. I COULD HEAR NOISE IN THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT WHEEL AREA. I IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE SHOP FOREMAN ROAD TESTED AND WOULDN'T SAY MUCH ABOUT THE STEERING. I EXPLAINED THAT THE WHEEL WAS ALWAYS MUCH EASIER TO TURN AND EXPLAINED THAT THE STEERING IS ALL OF A SUDDEN RESPONDING DIFFERENTLY. SEVERAL BUMPS FELT HARSH FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE WHERE THEY HAD NOT FELT AS HARSH BEFORE. I COULD HEAR AND FEEL A LIGHT CLUNKING DURING BRAKING THREE TIMES FROM THE PASSENGER SEAT. SHOP FOREMAN DIDN'T REALLY SEEM TO NOTICE MUCH WRONG AS USUAL. HE DID SEE THE TIRE WEAR AND WAS LIKE "WOW". HE IS GOING TO ASK THE SERVICE MANAGER FOR PERMISSION TO PUT THE VEHICLE ON THEIR ALIGNMENT MACHINE. THEY HAVE LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE ON THE LIFT TWICE AND NEVER FOUND ANYTHING VISUALLY WRONG. I HAVE MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE VEHICLE LOOKED AT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE FOR A SECOND OPINION. I FEEL UNSAFE IN THIS VEHICLE AND UNFORTUNATELY NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE TO GET TO WORK.

ENGINE IN 2000 CHRYSLER INTREPID STARTED TAPPING NOISE AT 58017KM BROUGHT TO DEALER WITH COMPLAINT, TOLD THEY WOULD NOT TAKE ENGINE APART TO CHECK NOISE. I TOLD THEM I HAD BEEN TOLD THAT THE 2.7 ENGINE HAD PROBLEMS WITH SLUDGE THAT PREVENTED THE OIL FROM CIRCULATING PROPERLY. THEY STILL REFUSED TO CHECK ENGINE. AT JUST OVER 62000 KM ENGINE BECAME NOISY. BROUGHT IT BACK TO DEALER WHO KEPT THE CAR FOR TWO WEEKS, THEN TOLD ME ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $6500.00 AND THERE WOULD BE NO WARRANTY COVERAGE OR GOODWILL. I GAVE THEM A COMPLETE HISTORY OF MAINTENANCE RECORDS SHOWING THAT PROPER MAINTENANCE WAS DONE WITH IN THE REQUIRED MILEAGE AND TIME. THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THE INVOICES DO NOT CLEARLY IDENTIFY MY 2000 BLACK INTREPID AND THAT IT COULD OF BEEN ANOTHER CAR. I ONLY OWN ONE 2000 INTREPID. THE INVOICE SHOWS THE WORK THE MILEAGE AND MY NAME AND DATE. NEXT ME THEY TOLD ME THE INVOICE NUMBERS WERE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER. THE WORK WAS DONE AT FOUR DIFFERENT GARAGES. THEN THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS SLUDGE THAT SHOWED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT PROPERLY MAINTAINED. THEN THEY ASKED ME THE BRAND OF OIL THE GARAGES USED AS IT MAY HAVE BEEN FAULTY. END RESULT IS THAT THEY REFUSE TO CHANGE THEIR POSITION IN REGARDS TO WARRANTY COVERAGE OR GOODWILL REPAIRS AND I WILL HAVE TO REPLACE AN ENGINE THAT WAS BOUGHT BRAND NEW IN MAY 2001. I AM FRUSTRATED AND DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO TURN. ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I AM NOW ON AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. I STILL OWE $8,000.00 ON MY CAR. IT HAS 60,000 MILES. I HAVE MAINTAINED IT EVERY 3,000 MILES AS SUGGESTED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. I ONLY USE 97 OCTANE GAS. I AM A VERY CAUTIOUS DRIVER. I TAKE CARE OF THE CAR BUT THE CAR HAS LEFT ME STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGHWAYS PUTTING MY LIFE AND THE LIVES OF MY PASSENGERS IN DANGER. I NEVER KNOW WHEN THE CAR IS GOING TO BREAK DOWN AGAIN AND WHERE SO I AM ALWAYS UNDER TERRIBLE STRESS. I PRAY AS I DRIVE THAT I MAKE IT TO MY DESTINATION. THIS CAR HAS BEEN A LEMON SINCE I BOUGHT IT. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THE ENGINE BLOWING. MY BROTHER IN LAW WAS DRIVING AND I WAS THE PASSENGER ON SOUTH DIXIE HIGHWAY (US1) IN SOUTH MIAMI WHEN WE WERE AT A RED LIGHT AND THEN STARTED TO GO WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING LIGHTS, NOISES, OR ANYTHING THE CAR STOPPED RUNNING. IT DIED IN THE MIDDLE LANE. WE HAD TO PUSH IT TO THE SIDE. IT WAS RUSH HOUR AND THIS HIGHWAY IS FILLED WITH VERY AGGRESSIVE DRIVERS. THEY WERE ALL CURSING, BEEPING, SIGNALING, AND DRIVING SO CLOSE TO US AS TO ALMOST TOUCH US. I WAS PETRIFIED. I THOUGHT A CAR WAS GOING TO HIT US. I PAID FOR THE ENGINE REPAIR OUT OF MY POCKET, BECAUSE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY TOLD THE DEALER THEY COULD NOT COVER IT BECAUSE THERE WAS SLUDGE BUILD UP. THEY SEND AN ADJUSTOR WHO REPORTED IT TO THEM. THE DEALER TOLD US TO FIGHT IT BECAUSE THE SLUDGE WAS NORMAL FOR THAT TYPE OF ENGINE. WE PROVIDED THE EXTENDED WARRANTY ALL THE RECEIPTS FOR THE MAINTENANCE THAT WE RELIGIOUSLY DID ABOUT EVERY 3000 MILES. WE ALSO HAD ANOTHER MECHANIC GO IN AND LOOK AT THE CAR. THE OTHER MECHANIC SAID THAT THESE TYPES OF ENGINES ALWAYS HAD THE PROBLEM OF SLUDGE BUILD UP AND THAT IT WAS NORMAL FOR THE ENGINE AND THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY SHOULD COVER IT.

IT GOT PROGRESSIVELY WORSE TO THE POINT WHERE I OCCASIONALLY HAD TO "WRESTLE" THE STEERING WHEEL BACK TO CENTER POSITION. IT ALSO FEELS LOOSE, SUSPENSION RATTLES AND I'VE GOT 4 INCHES OF PLAY AT CENTER. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED IT WOULD COST $1200 TO FIX. SERVICE REP TRIED TO EXPLAIN THAT THIS WAS PRETTY COMMON NOWADAYS WITH THE SEALED RACKS AND NOT JUST DODGE. I'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS TYPE OF FAILURE IN ALL OF THE YEARS I'VE OWNED CARS AND THINK THIS IS JUST A POOR DESIGN THAT DODGE IS KEEPING MUM ABOUT. THE VEHICLE IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD WITH MOSTLY HIGHWAY DRIVING. I'M PURCHASING A USED RACK FROM A SALVAGE YARD AND HAVING DODGE INSTALL IT FOR $380 AND THEN I'M SELLING IT. THIS CAR IS QUICKLY FALLING APART. AIR CONDITIONING: STARTED HEARING A HISSING TYPE SOUND FROM BEHIND THE DASH. SOON AFTER A/C DID NOT BLOW COLD AIR. CONTROL MODULE DISPLAY ALSO STOPPED WORKING. DODGE SAID IN ORDER TO FIX THE A/C THEY HAD TO REPAIR THE MODULE. COST: ABOUT $600. I BOUGH A MODULE FROM A SALVAGE YARD AND DID IT MYSELF, SAVED $500. THEN DODGE RECHARGED THE SYSTEM ONLY TO HAVE IT LEAK OUT OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. BROUGHT IT BACK TO DODGE WHERE THEY FOUND A CRACK IN THE EVAPORATOR. REPLACEMENT COST: $500. POWER WINDOW MOTOR: RIGHT FRONT POWER WINDOW STARTED FAILING INTERMITTENTLY, THEN STOPPED WORKING ALTOGETHER. DEALER SAID THAT THE WINDOW SOMETIMES GETS STUCK IN THE TIGHT WEATHER STRIPPING DUE TO DIRT AND GRIME ON THE WINDOW AND I SIMPLY NEED TO COAX IT BY MY PALM PRESSING DOWN ON IT WHILE ACTUATING THE BUTTON. WHAT A BUNCH OF @*$%! REAR RIGHT WINDOW MOTOR WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY, THIS MUST BE A COMMON PROBLEM. DEALER WANTS $200+ TO REPAIR. WHAT A RACKET! CAR STARTED MAKING A NOISE IN THE FRONT END. IT WOULD ONLY START AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR MORE THAT 45 MINUTES. NOISE WAS SO BAD AT TIMES THAT IT SOUNDED AS IF THE FRONT END WAS GOING TO FALL OUT. SHORTLY AFTER, THE STEERING GOT EXTREMELY LOOSE FROM LEFT AND RIGHT. STEERING IS SO BAD, YOU CAN'T KEEP THE CAR IN BETWEEN THE LINES ON THE ROAD. TOOK TO DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED IT AS THE RACK AND PINION STEERING. THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH OTHER INTREPIDS AND TIE-ROD END BUSHINGS, HOWEVER, THAT IS NOT THE CASE WITH MINE. I GOT A SECOND OPINION FROM ANOTHER REPUTABLE TECHNICIAN AND HE CAME TO THE SAME CONCLUSION. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL TECHS TELL ME THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN A RACK WEAR OUT UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS UNLESS THE PART WAS MANUFACTURERS DEFECT. I HAVE CONTACTED DODGE AND THEY WILL NOT STAND BEHIND IT BECAUSE THE 3 YEAR WARRANTY IS OUT. IF THE PART IS DEFECTIVE, HOW CAN THEY NOT STAND BEHIND THEY PRODUCT OR BE HELD RESPONSIBLE? THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS $1200.00. BECAUSE OF SAFETY FOR MYSELF AND MY CHILDREN, I CAN NOT DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL I HAVE THE MONEY FOR REPAIRS. JUST A NOTE, I FINANCED THE CAR FOR THREE YEARS AND IT WON'T EVEN BE PAID FOR UNTIL DECEMBER OF THIS YEAR. IT'S A SHAME THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS CAN HAPPEN ON A CAR THAT ONLY HAS 50,000 MILES AND LESS THAN THREE YEARS OLD. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME.*AK

THE DEALERSHIP MANAGER, ROD HARRIS, ADMITS IT A LIFTER TICKING BUT INSISTS THAT IT IS NORMAL. CHRYSLER GAVE ME AN "ADDED CARE SERVICE CONTRACT" THAT IS GOOD THROUGH 6/26/04 AND TO 75,000 MILES. PLAN CODE IS AD675H. THEY REFUSE TO FIX MY CAR. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME, AFTER THE FIRST THREE ATTEMPTS TO FIX IT, I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH CHRYSLER ON 1/12/04. ALSO NOTE THEY STILL HAVE MY VEHICLE TODAY 1/12/04 BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. IT'S BEEN IN SERVICE FOR 5 DAYS. TRANSMISSION FAILED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON 1/7/04. I AM CONCERNED WITH THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE AND THE ENGINE FAILING NOW WITH MY 10 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER. *LA

1998 DODGE INTREPID--RACK AND PINION FAILED/BROKE. I HAD PULLED UP TO THE CURB TO RETRIEVE THE MAIL AND AS I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT TO PULL AWAY, I FELT/HEARD A LOUD POP. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS NO LONGER CONNECTED TO THE RACK AND PINION AS THE R&P HAS FAILED/BROKEN. THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD FREELY TURN BUT THE WHEELS WERE NOT MOVING. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO REPLACED THE RACK AND PINION STEERING AT A COST OF $650.00. FORTUNATELY, THE DEALER SPLIT THE COST WITH ME AS I HAD JUST BOUGHT THE CAR (USED) 30 DAYS PRIOR. I WAS STILL OUT $350.00. MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS, WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO MY FAMILY, SPECIFICALLY MY WIFE AND MY 2 YEAR OLD SON HAD THAT PART FAILED WHILE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY OR IN HEAVY CITY TRAFFIC. IT COULD HAVE COST US OUR LIVES...I ALSO HAVE A SLIGHT SHIMMY IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. I'M GUESSING A WARPED ROTOR AS I RECALL READING SOMETHING ABOUT THAT BEING AN INTREPID PROBLEM ALSO....I WARN ANY OF YOU WHO ARE HAVING STEERING PROBLEMS TO GET IT FIXED BEFORE YOU DRIVE IT....THE RACK AND PINION STEERING SYSTEM THAT WONT BE RECALLED COULD HAVE COST US OUR LIVES.
